The technological and social factors in the establishment of a proposed human colony in the planet Mars are discussed. A colony in Mars is possible because unlike the Moon, Mars has an atmosphere and has the metals, elements and gases to make the establishment of a civilization possible.

The hypersonic skyhook
Article Abstract:
Scientists have proposed skyhooks, which could catapult objects into space, since 1960, but the strong materials to build a functioning model are not available. A hypersonic skyhook would be possible because it would orbit closer to Earth. Equations are provided.

The magnetic sail
Article Abstract:
Efficient space travel should take full advantage of the available resources, of which there are not many in space. A magnetic sail would make use of the plasma winds and magnetic fields of space that have not been used effectively to propel spacecraft.
