The farced epistle as dramatic form in the twelfth century Renaissance

Article Abstract:

Farced epistles or troped lections were a category of drama in the medieval period which were comprised of narrative, dialogue and impersonations of voice. This started as a musical and literary form in the Carolingian era but it gained prominence in the twelfth century as farced epistle composition. Charles Homer Haskin has suggested a Classical foundation to the French renaissance. The troped lections were related to saint's feasts immediately after Christmas. The day of St. Stephen on 26th December was a special day for it.

Windings and turnings: the metaphoric labyrinth of Restoration dramatic theory

Article Abstract:

English dramatic theory in the 17th century had the metaphoric nature of a labyrinth, which fit classical tradition and the current political climate of the Puritan rebellion and Restoration. Sir William Davenant followed the Puritan notions of winding through a torturous world to a better one, as did Richard Flecknoe with his specific mentions of mazes. John Dryden wrote in the early Restoration years and also mentioned the labyrinth metaphor.

Walls and scaffolds: pictorial and dramatic passion cycles in the Duchy of Savoy

Article Abstract:

Late medieval pictorial and dramatic narrative cycles in the western Alpine Duchy of Savoy mutually influenced each other's artistic depictions. Murals and plays possessed similar structure and content, and were intended to perform the same instructional function. These similarities are partly explained by the two art forms' shared text, the Biblical story of Christ.
