The sweatshop story: using historical context to discover the narrative
Article Abstract:
Reporters did a dismal job in investigating the Aug. 1995 fire that broke out in an El Monte, CA, sweatshop that killed about 72 Thai workers. Journalists failed to compare working conditions in the US and the workers' country of origin, tended to portray sweatshop owners as generic 'bad guys' and did not attempt to dig beneath the surface to provide a truly in-depth story. Reporters covered the tragedy as an isolated event instead of connecting it to pertinent historical precedents. As a result, they failed to transform the story into a landmark case advocating reform in the garment industry.

Rethinking the news story for the Internet: hyperstory prototypes and a model of the user
Article Abstract:
Methods of organizing news stories and linking articles for the Internet were proposed to differentiate hyperstories from text found in other news mediums. Journalists are encouraged to structure hyperstories in such a way that users can derive a different meaning from a text by using links that will expound on the text's content. Also, they are urged to create headlines as abstracts which will be interesting to users and make use of glossaries that will enable them to become familiar with terms they rarely encounter.

The wife's story
Article Abstract:
Anne Dick examines the character of her former husband, science fiction writer Philip K. Dick, in her book 'Search for Philip K. Dick, 1928-1982. A Memoir and Biography of the Science Fiction Writer.' The first half of the book is a personal narrative dwelling on their marriage, while the rest is an examination of the writer's life before and after this marriage. The exploratory nature of the book makes it difficult to read, and it is not certain who its intended readers are.
