Article Abstract:

The lack of governance in freelance employment practices has made freelancers in broadcasting industry susceptible to exploitation. In this light, Pact's offer to renegotiate the contract with independent production companies may be termed as tentative relief measure not a permanent solution. It is also a confined area where media secretary, Ofcom or broadcasters are unwilling to tread. The reasons for this hesitation on part of authorities are discussed.

The implications of broadcasting regulations in UK are presented. Broadcasting industry faces a tough time with political machinery to formulate the required laws. Opinions of Ofcom officials, media secretary, politicians and viewers on this issue are presented.

In 2000 President Vladimir Putin lead what many consider a crackdown on media independence and journalistic freedom, with media mogul-turned-politician Boris Berezovsky increasingly shut out of any influence with the Russian government.
