Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the employment patterns in the television industry since 1980 are examined, focusing on the consequences of a transformation of the work force from long-term workers to a staff marked by free-lance workers and short-term contracts. Topics include career patterns for workers of different ages, and the tension between career development and competitive forces.
