Symposium on school quality and educational outcomes: introduction
Article Abstract:
The Review of Economics and Statistics journal has published a Symposium on School Quality and Educational Outcomes. The papers included in the symposium answer issues brought up by the Coleman Report made in 1966. They specifically tackle three key issues, namely, whether school input effects have decreased secularly, whether analysis is performed at the aggregate state level or the disaggregate school district or school level and whether effects unique to a certain family are appropriately controlled.

The effect of measured school inputs on academic achievement: evidence from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s birth cohorts
Article Abstract:
Aggregate historical data on school inputs were used to forecast scholastic achievement of people in the three cohorts used by Card and Krueger (1992) to assess school quality impacts on income returns to education. The three cohorts comprise persons born in the 1920s, the 1930s and the 1940s. Results showed the relevance of aggregation in modeling the link between school inputs and student outcomes.

Using siblings to estimate the effect of school quality on wages
Article Abstract:
Sibling variations have been used as a basis for estimating the impact of school inputs on wages. Data on sibling pairs from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Labor Market Experience of Young Men and Young Women were analyzed. Results showed the positive influence of expenditures per pupil, teachers' salary and a composite index of school qualityt indicators on the wages of high school graduates.
