Teen out-of wedlock births and welfare receipt: the role of childhood events and economic circumstances
Article Abstract:
Stressful family events in childhood, financial resources and the family backgrounds of almost 900 girls aged 19-25 in 1987 were studied to identify a link with the likelihood of a teenager having a baby prior to marriage and obtaining welfare. The probability of an unmarried teenager giving birth increases for those girls who experienced disruptive events in childhood, those whose mothers themselves gave birth prior to marriage and those whose mothers lack education. Girls are also more likely to have children out of wedlock if their own mothers obtained welfare.

The impact of industrial policy on Japan's trade specialization
Article Abstract:
The effect of industrial policy on trading patterns in Japan is studied, and its welfare-enhancing impact examined. Trade specialisation in Japan has apparently been affected by industrial policies, possibly due to the long-term impact of policy interventions or to the foresight of policymakers. Interventions that have enhanced welfare are not commonplace. Welfare-enhancing subsidies must move marginal sectors to exports from imports, with some such cases described.
