Maritime ambition: China's naval modernisation

Article Abstract:

The shift in military strategy of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) due the unease brought by the changes in the Pacific Rim has made the PLA(N) (People's Liberation Army/Navy) the foremost projector of China's military power. The significant economic fluctuations in the region, the decline of Russia's role and military capabilities, an unclear picture of US's commitment and the uncertainty over Japan's position, spurred the reform in PLA(N)'s primary role. Currently, the PLA(N) aims to achieve a better operational capability through improved training and reequipment programs, including indigenous design, development and production of surface and submarine combatants.
