From portapak to camcorder: a brief history of guerrilla television
Article Abstract:
The development of camcorders and other portable video equipment since the 1960s has stimulated the growth of two forms of guerrilla television. Underground video, like cinema verite, focuses on capturing spur-of-the-moment, undirected events. Community video, less concerned with artistry and form experimentation, tackles social issues with the aim of bringing about change. These alternative media remain powerful communication tools, despite the weakened support for them in the 1990s.

Gunning for a new slow motion: The 45-degree shutter and the representation of violence
Article Abstract:
Films like 'Bonnie and Clyde' and 'Saving Private Ryan' that use slow motion and the 45-degree shutter to visually reference historically relevant documentary films and photographs and thus enhancing the sense of realism are explored. The way this use of distortion-as-realism echoes Vietnam authors' claims about perception of realism and how this relatively new film technique reflects a larger national discourse about the perception and representation of violence is discussed.

Up close and in motion: Volvo invents cubist television
Article Abstract:
The Volvo commercials of the early 1990s marks the beginning of cubist television in that it, like cubist art, used close-ups, flattened the image and present vision-in-motion. This was a real break from the earlier television commercials, which were based on traditional forms and avoided close-ups and tried to create depth behind the subject. By breaking with tradition, commercials have brought viewer and subject closer together and given viewers a new perspective.
