Readerly and writerly 'Letters From the Park.' (analysis of 'Cartas del parque,' based on Gabriel Garcia Marquez's story)

Article Abstract:

Gabriel Garcia Marquez's novel, 'One Hundred Years of Solitude,' was a success, and gave him the economic freedom to pursue his cinematic ambitions. He first studied cinematography at the Centro Sperimentale in Rome but took to writing in the 1960s. The six films of the 'Amores Dificiles' series, linked by the common theme of an obsession with love and violent deaths, and directed by film producers from Cuba, Colombia, Mexico, Spain, Venezuela and Brazil, are based on his stories. 'Cartas del parque,' the first film in the series, is a simple narrative directed by Cuban director Tomas Gutierrez Alea.

Giggles and guns: the phallic myth in 'Unforgiven.'

Article Abstract:

A feminist analysis of the film 'Unforgiven' yields a persistent reference to the masculine identifications with the phallus and the phallic symbols that marginalize the presence of women in the film. The plot begins as a revenge narrative initiated by a group of prostitutes whose safety is being threatened by a man whose masculinity has been questioned. The women subsequently lose control of the narrative when the avenging figure they hire relies on violence to symbolically regain his own 'lost' masculinity.

American myth and national inspiration: Bill Couturie's Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam

Article Abstract:

An argument is presented that Bill Couturie's 1987 documentary "Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam" is a universalizing, synthetic account of the Vietnam War, that stands apart with its need to produce a strong emotional attachment to the nation for citizens.
