Tapping local roots for medicines
Article Abstract:
Project Unima used the ethnophamacological approach and worked with the Caboclo community to establish the medicinal value of four plants which the community uses frequently. Such an approach speeds up the process of botanical research in the rainforest of the Amazon delta because knowledge acquired over ages is available. Project Unima has established the scientific validity of native medicine and has paved the way for similar research which can record details which the Amerindian communities are losing because of the intrusion of Western medicine.
