The physical characteristics of the DCC tape format include length and width comparable to traditional analog cassettes, with upper and lower sectors corresponding to the two sides of analog tape. DCC also offers 8 recording tracks, and an auxiliary track for non-audio signals.

The Minidisc uses Sony's proprietary ATRAC data compression system. Its memory chip acts as a 10-second buffer to supply uninterrupted sound in its portable or auto units despite jarring bumps. The electronics behind its nearly CD-quality sound are provided.
