'Here We Come Home in a Leaky Ship!': the shanty collection of James Madison Carpenter
Article Abstract:
James Madison Carpenter amassed one of the largest collections of sea shanties while researching folk music in Britain, including lyrics, music, and recordings. Some of the more unusual songs in this collection are compared with well-known shanties, and the influence of black working songs is examined.
