A computer controversy in the ring
Article Abstract:
The United States Olympic boxing trials use a computerized scoring system that has caused some controversy since the system counts only landed punches. In general, the boxers favored to win their matches did, until the computer influenced a controversial decision. Computerized scoring declared Julian Wheeler the winner over Ivan Robinson even though observers deemed Robinson to be the better fighter. The system will be used during the 1992 Olympic competitions and was used in the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul, South Korea. Boxing officials implemented the system after controversial decisions named Park Si Hun the victor over Ray Jones in the 1988 light-middleweight gold-medal match.

The bike computer: coxswain and trainer in a small package
Article Abstract:
Portable computers are now available for serious bicyclists who want to monitor and record their performances. One of these devices - SpeedZone P. Brain from Specialized Bicycles - is designed to measure wheel rotations (speed), time, distance traveled, altitude (elevation) and heart rate. Some devices can also calculate pedaling rhythm, or cadence, after wheel and gear sprocket sizes are entered into the computer. The use of 'cyclometers' began in the 1860's when riders wanted to know how far they had cycled. Such manual devices were attached to a bicycle's wheels or spokes, the same as their electronic counterparts are today.
