The Alberta provincial government launched NovAtel Communications in 1983 to diversify the province's industrial base. However, the company has turned into a financial mess that has cost Alberta taxpayers at least $500 million. Most of the money was loaned to small rural US telephone companies.

Thomas Douglas was elected to Canada's Parliament in 1935 as a member of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), which promoted social reforms that remain today. The CCF became the New Democratic Party, which still influences Canada's social policy.
