A dangerous, decisive year
Article Abstract:
South Korea in 1961 ranked as one of the poorest countries in the world, which was as a result of occupation and war. People spent the winter without homes, food, and money. However, in 1996, South Korea was ranked as the world's 11th largest economy, a leading producer of ships and steel, autos, and semiconductors. The government took the lead in telling banks how much to give in credit, to whom, and what interest rates to charge. This system of government led to the 1997 crisis and election of President Dae Jung, who has introduced new ways of doing business.
