The ethnic Chinese in Indonesia have become scapegoats for the economic crisis that has caused the collapse of the currency and rampant inflation. Anti-Chinese riots have broken out in more than three dozen Indonesian cities and towns. Pro-government media are encouraging anti-Chinese sentiment with reports that Chinese businesses are hoarding food.
