Armed and dangerous
Article Abstract:
The newly elected head of the Indonesian National Commission on Human Rights in Dec 1998 has a new task of investigating the conflict in Aceh. The rebel activity in this province has intensified and on Dec 29, 1998, eight soldiers were brutally killed and dumped in a river. As violence erupted after these murders, many blamed the military for planning such attacks. The commissioner believes that peace can only be achieved in Indonesia when the military does not have a political role in the country's affairs.

A fighting chance
Article Abstract:
Former Indonesian president Soeharto says he welcomes open, free elections but he believes the country is not ready for them. Indonesia voters will have a choice of untried opposition party candidates. President B.J. Habibie has been the nation's leader since Soeharto stepped down, but is not sure if he will run as the ruling party's candidate. His support from Soeharto is questionable. Golkar figures have been accused of vote-buying and of instigating violence.
