Creative conundrum

The Australian arts community is facing financial challenges. The three sources of arts funding in Australia are the government, corporate sponsorship, and box-office receipts. However, these sources have contributed little in 1998. The hardest-hit areas are Queensland and South Australia. The government in May 1998 announced it will cut funding from $71.8 mil to $64.6 mil, further endangering the arts community.

John Wegner portrays a smouldering police chief in Puccini's opera 'Tosca'. His portrayal of a madman leaves audiences disgusted but wanting more. Wegner is a German-born bass baritone who moved to Australia when he was five. He realized he had a gift of communication which made him perform. He joined the Australian Opera in 1981 as a principal artist.

A gathering of 215 of Australia's most influential people in May 1999 will occur for a drugs summit. The NSW Drug Summit is the most comprehensive effort by politicians, law reformers, health and community workers, and academics. Organizers hope these people of varying backgrounds will reach an agreement for a way forward.
