Heavy rains caused destructive flooding along the Oder River in the Czech Republic and Poland, resulting in more than $5 billion in damages. Germany also suffered property damage. The government's response to the flood became a political issue in Poland.

Newfoundland's schools have been church-administered since the 1700s, but Premier Brian Tobin has launched an education reform plan to secularize the schools. A Sep 2, 1997, referendum will allow citizens to vote on the proposed secularization.

Rescue in the north: how the Canadian Forces saved four of their own

Article Abstract:

A Canadian Forces rescue helicopter successfully located the four-man crew of a Griffon helicopter that crashed off the Labrador coast. The Griffon crew had been taking part in the rescue of a severely ill fisherman aboard a trawler.
