The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences declared its 1993 awards show theme to be 'A Celebration of Women and the Movies.' However, many of the movie roles for women in 1993 portrayed them in a negative light. Women in the industry insist that men still dominate motion pictures.

Pressure groups in the US have been successful in making the major broadcast television networks exercise self-censorship by threatening to boycott advertisers. Canadian television artists report that advertiser worries has had little effect of the content of television programs.
