A state of de-Klein

Article Abstract:

Alberta Premier Ralph Klein has become widely known for his budget-cutting acumen, and some hope that Klein's aggressive anti-public sector ideology should be applied to Canada's federal budget. Although some cuts are needed, policymakers should resist the urge to adopt Klein's drastic methods.

The red and the black: Alberta and New Brunswick tackle their deficits with more cuts

Article Abstract:

New Brunswick Premier Frank McKenna has announced a balanced budget for 1995-96, while Alberta Premier Ralph Klein projects a deficit for the same fiscal year in excess of C$500 million. Both leaders have enacted spending cuts, but Klein has not raised taxes, as McKenna did in 1991.

How bad can it get?

Article Abstract:

The Canadian dollar fell sharply against the U.S. dollar in early Jan 1995, prompting fears that both interest rates and unemployment will increase, thereby halting Canada's economic recovery. Canada's high budget deficit and massive public debt are behind the gloomy forecasts.
