Air canada pilots plan to take strike vote
Article Abstract:
Air Canada pilots are eyeing to have a strike vote in July 1998, in a dispute related to wages and working conditions. The airline's 1,800 pilots are also seeking a federal conciliator to continue stalled contract negotiations. John Hamilton, a spokesman for Montreal, Quebec-based Air Canada, said that the airlines is looking forward to continuing the talks on a new labor contract without a strike. Captain Jean-Marc Belanger said the airline's pilots already made concessions in wages and working conditions at the time of a recent company restructuring and are presently among the lowest-paid pilots of any major airline. Belanger added that Air Canada wanted further concessions, and he charged that the airline sometimes disregard the terms of the last contract of some pilots.

Air Canada set to fly again
Article Abstract:
Air Canada, the largest airline company in Canada, has announced it reached an agreement in principle with representatives of its 2,100 striking pilots, a move that would allow Air Canada to resume its flights by next week. The agreement, which was approved following a three-day negotiation in a hotel in Montreal, Quebec, is still subject to approval of the 2,100 union members in Toronto, Ontario, Montreal, Quebec, Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Vancouver, British Columbia. Terms of the labor contract were not disclosed but an Air Canada spokesperson said the deal is acceptable to its pilots and at the same time provides the airline rooms for growth and a competitive advantage in the North American market.
