Are U.S. CEOs overpaid?
Article Abstract:
Questions concerning the fairness of CEO salaries are discussed. Supporters of CEO salary packages, which can sometimes total millions of dollars, believe the salaries and stock options are warranted for CEOs who increase their companies stock prices. Opponents of the large salary packages cite the disparity between employee salaries and those of CEOs. Also noted is the fact that US CEOs are the highest paid in the world and their stock option benefits offer little personal incentive to increase stock dividends.

Government's dilemma
Article Abstract:
The average American is furious over the seemingly high salaries of bureaucrats. The overwhelming public opposition to the proposed pay hike for Congress in 1988 forced Congress to scale down the increase. The executive, judicial and legislative branches of government are having difficulty in recruiting and keeping talented executives simply because government pay is too low. Government salaries are relatively low in comparison with other industrial nations.

Shareholder activism
Article Abstract:
Many corporate executives are responding to shareholder criticism and public pressure by reducing their pay. The new SEC rules allow shareholder-initiated inquiries on executive pay packages, abandoning its longheld position of laissez faire. Companies, henceforth, shall be required to make full disclosure of executive pay packages, and to subject the same to shareholder vote.
