Pratt & Whitney to cut 300 jobs in Longueuil

Aircraft engine maker Pratt and Whitney Inc will lay off 300 jobs at its plant in Longueuil, Quebece, to cut costs. The job cuts come two months after it received a C$154-million loan from the federal government under the Technology Partnership Canada Program. Pratt and Whitney said that the research and development deparments would not be affected by the layoffs. The compamy has eliminated 900 jobs, or 10% of its workforce, in 1998.

Quebecor president, CEO to be Pierre Karl Peladeau

Quebecor Inc of Montreal, Quebec, has named the son of its late founder as president and CEO of Canada's second-largest media empire. Pierre Karl Peladeau will take the posts at the company's annual shareholder meeting on Apr 29, 1999. The appointment is part of a management reorganization that saw many of founder Pierre Peladeau's closest confidants lose their operating roles.
