At issue: should Native Americans celebrate the 500th anniversary of Columbus' first voyage to the Americas?
Article Abstract:
The celebration of the 500th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America has become a subject of dispute. One side of the argument maintains that his exploit had improved the condition of the Native Americans. If the Indians had not been exposed to the civilized world, they would still be leading a primitive and savage lifestyle. However, based onfacts, Columbus was in fact a ruthless and selfish conqueror. Others will arguethat he brought slavery, disease and death to the Indians. The countless NativeAmericans who had died in the hands of the Europeans is no reason to celebrate.

At issue: should the Corporation for Public Broadcasting be privatized?
Article Abstract:
Two sides to the issue of whether to privatize the Corporation for Public Broadcasting are presented. The proponents of privatization cite the numerous cultural programs already being aired by private networks and on the other hand, the growing commercialization of public broadcasting's programs. They also cite the lingering influence of politics on the current system. Defenders of the status quo cite the duty and role of public broadcasting to society. They believe that the concept should always be over and above commercial interests.
