B.C. forest industry turns profit in '99
Article Abstract:
The B.C. forest industry recovered its profitability by $923-million compared with a $1.1-billion loss last year. Sales increased to $18.2-billion from $15-billion. Twenty five percent of the sale went to government in the form of taxes and only 7.6% returned to shareholders on their capital. Despite its poor returns, the forest industry remains a key component of the B.C. economy. It accounted for 49% of manufacturing shipments, 14% all employment and 16% of B.C. gross domestic product.
