Clinton seeks to end crisis in Calif

Article Abstract:

California utilities attribute the $9 billion loss they have posted to a state deregulation law that denies them the ability to pass on higher energy energy costs to consumers. They argue that the 7%-15% rate increase approved by California official for two utilities is not enough for them to recuperate from their losses. Because of these complaints, a potential energy calamity may happen in California. Hence, Pres Clinton has stepped in to seek a compromise between utilities and the state government to provent the looming energy crisis from happening.

EPA to issue anti-pollution standards for cremations

Article Abstract:

The Environmental Protection Agency is in the process of formulating anti- pollution standards that would govern the US' cremation industry. The agency, which is expected to release the standards in 2000, is determining the best temperature that will result in cremations with the minimum of dust, smoke and gas emissions. Crematoriums in the US perform over 500,000 cremations annually, almost 25% of all deaths in the country.
