BCT.Telus to challenge Bell with new network

Article Abstract:

BCT.Telus Communications Inc of Burnaby, British Columbia will invest C$260 million to develop its own fiber optic lines across Canada. The planned network will be larger than any of its competitors such as BCE Nexxia Inc, AT&T Canada Corp and Sprint. The plans will involve partnership with Worldwide Fiber, two high-speed lines from Metromedia Fiber Network Services, the use of GTE Corp lines from Seattle to Detroit and on to Toronot and Montreal, the extension of GTE network to Halifax and the construction of 864 fiber lines in Toronto.

Teleglobe slashes earnings estimate

Article Abstract:

International long distance carrier Teleglobe Inc of Montreal, Quebec, has lowered its earnings estimates for 1999 to 48-50 cents per share, about half of its initial projection. The company originally announced an earnings forecast of $1 per share then lowered it to 70-80 cents per share. Teleglobe said that earnings were squeezed as a result of lower revenue growth in its overseas calling business and increased expenses at its US consumer long-distance company.
