Booking with a computer
Article Abstract:
Travelers who have a microcomputer equipped with a modem can access various on-line information services when planning a trip. All sorts of information is available: flight schedules can be examined, the weather at a destination can be checked and restaurant reviews can be retrieved. A market researcher estimates that six million American homes now have microcomputers with modems, and almost any electronic mail or on-line service allows access to such airline guides as OAG, Easy Sabre or Worldspan Travelshopper. Some users say that on-line services can save money; others say that the cost of using the services themselves is too much. Some say that even though on-line services are available and easily accessible, such services can be difficult to use, and it is faster and better and less expensive to call an experienced travel agent.

Investing in the new nomads
Article Abstract:
Venture capitalist and partner of the firm, Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, L. John Doerr says his company has invested approximately $25 million in computer industry start-up firms between 1988 and 1992. Those start-ups include EOS, Cellular Data, Go Corp, the Slate Corp and Pen Magic and all of them are involved in developing a new generation of handheld computers. Doerr is most excited about all the innovations happening in the hand-held computer industry. Doerr predicts that by the year 2000, the hand-held computer industry will be worth more than $100 billion. The chaotic times that the hand-held device industry is currently undergoing pose tremendous opportunities, Doerr believes.
