The Australian fashion industry is focusing on understanding and meeting the needs of its customers after seeing its share of consumer spending fall from 8.5% in the 1970s to 5.5% in 1998. Stores are selling a lifestyle rather than just clothing by adding food, coffee, sporting goods, books and other products to their merchandise offerings. Social analysts are advising retailers about individualizing mass marketing.
