The commercialization of Australian football began in 1965, when Melbourne Football Club player Ron Barassi moved to Carlton for a higher salary. The fact that Barassi was Italian was not insignificant because the game also changed when Europeans began to populate the football clubs. The loyalty among predominantly Irish clubs began to decline.
