CGI shares reach record high

CGI Group Inc.'s shares rose 30%, with its class A shares reaching a record high of C$34.85. Montreal, Quebec-based computer services firm CGI is rumored to be planning on acquiring a US-based company, prompting its stock to rise. Another factor that boosts CGI's stock is its being named as the company of the year by the Montreal business weekly Les Affaires. CGI spokesman Ronald White said that CGI Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Serge Godin informed shareholders during the company's annual meeting that the company is looking for a new business that is expected to be in the US.

Xinex warns its coffers near empty

Xinex Networks Inc., based in New Westminster, BC, announced that it is in need of new financial support as it is running out of cash. The company is bound to end up in insolvency if it fails to achieve a deal with a firm that may put in $3.6 million. Mark Brennan of Linear Capital Corp., which is in-charge of investor relations in Xinex, stated that the company is perennially undercapitalized as it failed to receive the amount of financing as intended. The company also suffers from the monthly cost of C$500,000 a month for intensive research and other expenses.

Corel finds life after Microsoft battle
Article Abstract:
Software developer Corel Corp of Ottawa, Ontario, has reported a profit of C$9.2 million, or 2 cents a share, in its second fiscal quarter ended May 31, 1999. The company is also projecting a profit for the full FY1999. The profit ended the company's two years of heavy losses resulting from its marketing battle with Microsoft Corp. Corel posted losses of C$231.7 million in 1997 and C$30.4 million in 1998.
