CHINA: SOHU.COM OFFERS MOBILE MESSAGE SERVICE

In China, a customised mobile message service has been jointly launched by China Mobile and Sohu.com. With the partnership, users of China Mobile will be able to access sms.sohu.com to place order for the sending of email notifications and Chinese-languages messages on sports or stocks to their cellular phones. To be able to enjoy the email notifications, the mobile phone users must have an email account at Sohu.com. Charges on the mobile message service will be imposed by China Mobile. Two pricing systems are available, namely on monthly basis or on message basis. The email notification service will cost users RMB 5 per month. Users wanting messages on soccer match results will have to pay RMB 10 each month, while a charge of RMB 2 will be imposed for daily stock market news. Sohu.com is an Internet portal, while China Mobile is a mobile phone firm.

CHINA: BOOMING BUSINESS OF HANDICRAFT AND TOYS

As revealed by China Toy Association, China is selling toys with value of US$ 5 bn across the word, in which the size of toy market tops at US$ 50 bn. China thus is snatching up 10% of the world's toy market. Meanwhile, Chinese toy producers are sending 80% of their products to overseas. Separately, a year-on-year growth of 30.5% was posted for exports of Christmas ornaments during January-October 2000. During the 10 months' duration, ornaments with combined value of US$ 820 mn were exported by Chinese producers, which have made the most ornaments and toys for Christmas in this world.
