Cellular phone deals for alert buyers
Article Abstract:
As cellular telephone purchases increase and prices fall, competition among manufacturers and service providers is intensifying. Phone prices have fallen to as little as $50 in some cases, and as prices decline, more and more people buy cellular phones. Buying a phone can be a complicated procedure: there are three kinds of phones (mobile phones, for inside a car; transportable phones, for inside or outside a car; and portable phones, for outside use); and there are as many as seven different plans for buying cellular services. According to Dataquest Inc, a research company, cellular phone sales are expected to increase 48 percent in 1990, bringing the total number to almost 5 million. The phone base could increase by another 34 percent in 1991, and one observer expects that prices will come down 20 percent to 30 percent through the mid-1990s.

Beepers, in a new role, keep families in touch
Article Abstract:
Beepers, otherwise known as radio pagers, are being used in new ways, often for personal or family reasons. Short-term rental arrangements are appearing in response to this market. Metromedia Paging Services, Secaucus, NJ, offers daily or weekly beeper rentals through a supermarket chain, Schnucks Markets. The cost is $2 to $3.50 a day or $10 to $17.50 a week. Paging involves a one-way communication system that transmits using radio waves. About 600 companies in the US now offer variations on four kinds of paging services: tone only; tone and a brief voice message; numeric, which displays a phone number to be called; and alphanumeric, which displays up to 1,000 characters of text. At some schools, pagers are outlawed because their use is associated with dealings in illegal drugs.
