Digging for dollars: mining is trapped in hard times
Article Abstract:
The mining industry is declining in Canada because existing resources are being depleted faster than new ones are being discovered. Thirty-three Canadian mines closed in 1991, while only 18 opened. Unemployed miners are seeking employment elsewhere, as the global recession continues to push mineral prices down.

Article Abstract:
Economic recovery in the US has spurred a demand for lumber from Canada because of low supplies in the US. The increased demand helped prices rise from $258 per thousand board feet to $565 per thousand board feet from Oct 1992 to Feb 1993. Conservation in the US has reduced the supply of lumber.
