Downward mobility: what happened to the American Dream?
Article Abstract:
Corporate downsizing and sluggish economic growth have led some people to believe that the generation now entering the work force may never reach the standard of living their parents achieved. Manufacturers are closing plants and laying-off employees and more businesses are using temporary workers to cut cost by paying them less and not providing benefits. More displaced workers are staying unemployed for long periods. Even those who do have jobs are feeling the pressure of downsizing and cost cutting. The economic and psychological effects of downward mobility are discussed.

Labor movement's future: can unions regain some of their lost power?
Article Abstract:
The labor movement may be moving forward with the election of John J. Sweeney as president of the AFL-CIO, although many believe that changes in the US economy and workers' resistance to joining unions will ultimately defeat union attempts to gain membership in the private sector. Many workers feel that workplace laws protect them and conflict between management and employees has lessened. However, in the wake of corporate downsizing, white collar workers may decide they need representation for job security and higher wages.
