Foot-and-mouth disease has taken hold in Great Britain in 2001, but scientists have been working for over a decade to find a cure for this contagious disease. The work of the Plum Island Animal Disease Center in the United States is discussed.

Destroying the Afghan past

The Taliban regime in Afghanistan has decided to destroy the ancient Buddhist statues carved into the cliffs of Bamiyan. Despite international outcries the fundamentalist leader of the Taliban has declared the statues an offence to Islam.
