Rural areas losing new car lots
Article Abstract:
The number of new car dealerships in the US dropped by 200 to 22,400 in 1998. The number of rural dealerships, or those outside metro areas, declined 17% between 1986 and 1996. In addition, about 460 of the 3,143 counties in the US had no dealerships at the end of 1996. Small dealers reported problems such as the wild swings in the local economy; higher costs of advertising, personnel and inventory charges; costs of showroom upgrades and lack of vehicles to sell, particulary pickup trucks.
