Great walls of fire

Article Abstract:

United States politicians are pressuring China to revalue its currency as the US is facing a rising current account deficit, mainly because of the success of Chinese imports displacing domestic manufacturers. But, given the enormous comparative advantage China enjoys over the US in labor costs, even a significant revaluation would not correct the current account deficit, nor would it recreate the many manufacturing jobs that were effectively exported out of the US to China.

China's century babies

Article Abstract:

Chinese officials are concerned about the many couples who hope to have a child just after midnight on Jan 1, 2000. Promoters have been advertising gifts for the infants who are born first in the new millennium. Officials fear a surge in births will strain medical services, eventually crowd schools, and aggravate China's population problem. China's population increases annually by 13 mil.

Going too fast?: rising prices and rolling blackouts raise concern that the Chinese economy is overheating

Article Abstract:

The shortage in the supply of water, coal and electricity in China has forced the government to impose rolling blackouts in the residential areas to ensure that there is no cut back in the manufacturing process of the large industries. Economists are of the opinion that in order to ensure smooth power supply, the government will have to take additional steps and set up new power plants.
