H-P revamps to serve businesses
Article Abstract:
Hewlett-Packard (HP) combined on Oct. 20, 1998, two of its business units into a single entity to deliver better services to its business customers. The company merged its enterprise systems group with its software and services center to create a single unit that provides business customers with a one-stop shop for hardware, software and support services. However, people from Wall Street viewed the move as a cost cutting measure from the company, which recorded a lower revenue growth in the quarter ending Jul. 31, 1998. Wall Street analysts doubt the move would help H-P rev up its earnings.

Judge questions Sun's claim that Microsoft sabotaged Java
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Corp, at its antitrust hearing in Washington on Dec 10, 1998, said that instead of sabotaging Java, the company actually made the operating system better. Sun Microsystems' vice president James Gosling, a witness for the government, said that the new Java was indeed better in some aspects but pointed out that Microsoft proceeded to link the software to its Windows operating system. The government's premise is that Microsoft's move is intended to reduce the threat posed by the Java software to Windows.
