IBM's dismal outlook leads to late-day slump

International Business Machines Corp (IBM) has reported a profit of $1.8 billion, or 93 cents a share, on revenue of $21.1 billion in the 3rd qtr 1999. Hardware revenue declined by 1% to $8.8 billion during the period. IBM added that the earnings will drop by 15 to 20 cents a share in the 4th qtr 1999, and will remain flat in the 1st qtr 2000. IBM said the firms have been putting off their purchases of new IBM computer system until past the year 2000. IBM also attributed its lower revenue projections to lower server sales and shortages of flat panel displays used in laptops.

H-P hurt by quake, slowdown
Article Abstract:
Hewlett-Packard Co is experiencing a downside mainly due to the effects of the Taiwan earthquake that resulted in parts shortages in its production facilities. Similar to other computer companies, H-P is also feeling the negative impact of consumer tendency to slow down on purchases as they wait for the impact of the year 2000 issues. Analyst Daniel Niles also noted that the company could yield lower profits as it lacks the competitive advantage in other arenas such as desktop products.

IBM, Dell deal put at $16B
Article Abstract:
Dell Computer Corp will acquire such hardware as custom chips, monitors and hard drives, from International Business Machines Corp (IBM) to be used in its computers under a $16-billion, seven-year agreement. Aside from sharing their patents, the two personal computer manufacturers will also collaborate on development and product technology. The nonexclusive deal will allow Dell Computer to shop and IBM to sell elsewhere.
