If ground rattles, they jump to work
Article Abstract:
The National Earthquake Information Center, a division of the Interior department, measures earthquakes all over the world and analyzes the results to chart possible patterns. The government agency uses computers and helicorders to measure the epicenter and activity of earthquakes. A total of 125 seismometers are located all over the country and connected back to the center. The center prepares reports about earthquakes larger than 4.5 on the Richter scale in the US, greater than 5.5 in Latin America and greater than 6.0 anywhere else. Many people assume the next large earthquake will hit California, but center staffers warn that earthquakes could hit Japan, Missouri or Ohio, among other places. The center records between 30 and 35 earthquakes every day. Some of the activity on the charts is actually the result of explosions.
