In Florida, testing a road to the future
Article Abstract:
Travel Technology (TravTek), a $12 million project that provides car drivers with instant access to travel information, is undergoing a year-long test in Orlando, FL. The technology, which is being tested in 100 Oldsmobile Tornados, combines car video screens with a network of 'smart roads.' Drivers can access video map displays, reports on current traffic conditions, audio and video driving instructions, and location and pricing of restaurants. The cars' computers receive information from highway video cameras, road sensors, construction reports and emergency vehicles. TravTek is a joint experiment of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Avis Rent A Car System, General Motors, Navigation Technologies Corp, Etak Inc and Motorola.
