Indonesia's Chinese still nervous
Article Abstract:
Chinese living in Indonesia are fearful in the wake of Pres Suharto's 1998 fall from office. Rioting Indonesians destroyed Chinese property during public protests that helped drive Suharto from his position. Indonesians resent the Chinese because Chinese have disproportionate economic influence in Indonesia and are Buddhist, while most Indonesians are Muslim. Nine of the top 10 businesses in Indonesia are Chinese-owned although Chinese represent less than 4% of the Indonesian population. President B.J. Habibie, who replaced Suharto, has failed to address prejudice against Chinese.

In the name of the people
Article Abstract:
Since 1975, East Timor has struggled for independence from Indonesia, and in Jan 1999, Indonesian President B.J. Habibie agreed to a referendum allowing the East Timorese to determine their future. However, the Indonesian military has opposed the president's reluctant concession, igniting a clash between paramilitary groups and civilians. The United Nations, attempting to curb the political instability, has decided to delay the ballot originally approved for Aug 8.
