This article examines the current state of Australia's insurance industry. Relevant points include the large financial losses recently suffered by the country's general insurers due to a propensity to take on risks unacceptable elsewhere, the likelihood that banks may take over more of the life insurance business, and the probability of more mergers in the insurance industry in general.
