International Monetary Fund
Article Abstract:
The Asian economic turmoil began in Thailand and soon spread to Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Russia, and South America. In its effort to stabilize these economies, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) provided financial assistance. The IMF requires that these countries adopt stricter measures such as spending cuts, cutting government deficits, and rising interest rates. However, many critics contend the IMF system further weakens these economies and needs fundamental reforms.

Global Refugee Crisis
Article Abstract:
Political unrest has driven the number of refugees to crisis proportions. Since the early 1980s, civil wars, invasions, military coups, ethnic cleansing policies and redrawn national borders have forced many people from their homes, creating huge collectives of exiled populations. Refugees typically live in overcrowded camps, which threaten their health and strain the resources of the host countries.
