There are 8,000 candidates vying for 543 parliamentary seats in India's elections to be held Apr 27-May 7, 1996. However, many voters are cynical or apathetic, and neither major party is likely to win a solid majority. Congress leader PV Narasimha Rao will probably form a coalition government.

Wei Jingsheng was convicted of subversion in Dec 1995, and was sentenced to 14 years in prison. He had previously served 14 years in jail for his political activities and was released in 1993. Human rights groups protested the conviction and Wei plans to appeal the sentence.
