'The Sparrow,' a science fiction novel by American author Mary Doria Russell, tells the story of a Jesuit mission to the planet Rakhat. Russell's former field was biological anthropology and she taught anatomy at a university in Cleveland. 'The Sparrow' was her first novel. She has since written a sequel, 'Children of God.'
