The Grameen Bank of Bangladesh is undergoing hardship of its own after a devastating floods in Aug 1998 destroyed the security of more than 1 million borrowers who are unable to make loan payments. The banks is recognized for providing small loans of around $100 so clients can purchase items to become self-sufficient. Since 1983 the bank has loaned $2.5 billion to 2.4 million borrowers and has a default rate of 2 percent.

Christians have lived in India for about 1,700 years and have generally been a peace-loving and caring minority, but their institutions and churches have been under attack by Hindus since the election of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janat Party (BJP). In some cases, priests were beaten, nuns were raped, and churches and schools were burned.
